Kanchit Sittiphol

Head of Archive Production

When Kanchit Sitthiphol (Yo / 1985) was a kid, he lived with his grandfather and grandmother. His family mainly did farming consisting of rice fields and mango gardens. Playing on the rice paddies, climbing the mango tree, and sitting on the Kup (‘Kup’ means ‘a plow’ in the local dialect back then) that his grandfather was riding were the fun of Kanchit’s childhood. Every day Khanit will cycle about one kilometer to wait for the student shuttle as his school was nine kilometers away. Some days after school, Kanchit would spend his time hunting frogs and toads to use them as bait. As the water reaches outside his home’s terrace on the flooding season of every year, his grandmother would row a boat to set up nets in the rice fields for some fish. Kanchit would always tag along.

Kanchit loved the tenth month (in the Thai calendar) of every year, as it was the time for Sat Thai festival in the temple. Kanchit would always help his grandmother carry some tiffin in order to make merits. The Sat Thai festival would have an open-air theater, Li-ke show, Soi-Daw raffle, and the “rat brings luck” gambling. Before he knew it, Kanchit has absorbed the local art and culture.

Kanchit’s first time with a camera was a Canon compact camera that uses 135 films. His mother brought it for him to play around with it. He took pictures until it was out of the roll and he hadn’t played with it since, as the film price was exorbitant back then. He moved to Bangkok to study in late Matthayom. He had participated in several art activities back then; such as being in the art department and creating backgrounds for scientific play, and creating artboards.

Kanchit studied for his bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from a Rajabhat University, and he used a camera for the second time in the basic photography subject. That was when he knew he likes to take pictures, and decided to study photography seriously at the Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Photography, Rangsit University. Kanchit likes to take photos of lifestyle and livelihood. He got a chance to travel to Mae Jam district, Chiang Mai province, through the invitation of his senior. That lit a spark to the fire of his passion -- to create a piece of photography about the lifestyle of farmers in Mae Jam district, which uses rice terraces.

One year later, Kanchit invited his two friends -- one of them Natthaphon Chaiworawat -- to take photographs in Mae Jam district again. In the same year, Kanchit sent a photo for a contest named “Sufficiency is sufficient”. He got a Royal Cup from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej from the Photos of the Kingdom of the year 2011-2012 project, under the concept of “for the benefits” which was hosted by The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand. Each photo on this project would be personally judged by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej himself, which was the fact that he took the most pride in.

From 2014-2017, Kanchit worked in Fareast Fameline DDB Co.,LTD. in the advertising production, still photography department. Since 2017, he has been working in Springboard Plus LTD, a creative agency company to the present.
